barry's song

by tim firth

©1984
this song was written for watershed, a group of talented young people who travelled round a canal in north west england with a revue (sort of like the cambridge footlights). although i was not part of the group i programmed the drum machine for them and recorded and produced the music for the bbc local radio series that followed. tim went from strength to strength writing for radio, theatre and television. his award winning children's itv series
is one of my favourites.

verse 1
i remember when i used to think that i couldn't write a love song
i'd sit for hours by the light of the moon but somehow
the words just came out wrong
and then you walked into my life and suddenly it all
came clear
because i spent every night with barry manilow on your
stereo

verse 2
soon i learnt that you had to start with a puffy
introduction
then in case they missed it the first time you do the
whole thing over again
and now we have a change of mood so i get a chance to
feel real sad
but not for long because we're getting higher and that
means there's change afoot

chorus
and it's the chorus and we'll keep it really simple
and then just when you all think that you can sing
along we'll hit a top 'a' flat
'cause barry's good at that.
woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah.

verse 3
now we come to the middle bit but there's still
something missing
it's that big expensive production sound which would
make this really epic
and so we go from a lonely solo voice to a tabernacle
choir
lead guitar, two hundred violins and then just for luck an extra big brass band

verse 4
well we'd love to do it with all of these things but we haven't got the money
why d'you think we've got just this guitar? 'cause it's cheap you dummy
and so you see i've got nothing more to say so i'm
calling it a day
but no, the chorus is near and it's here - no it's not,

chorus
now it's here, we're in the chorus and we'll keep it
really simple
and then just when you all think that you can sing
along we'll hit a top 'a' flat
'cause barry's good at that.
woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah.

middle
and then about this time when you get bored and fancy a cup of tea
we change the tune but it's just a trick 'cause very
soon we're back into

chorus
the same old chorus and we'll keep it really simple
and then just when you all think that you can sing
along we'll hit a top 'b' flat
'cause barry's good at that.
woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah.
