After
the Overture, this song opened the show and introduced the main character,
Joe Public. On one night Gareth Walton, the actor playing Joe, didn't
realise that his radio microphone had been turned off after the sound check.
He was very surprised when Geoff appeared beside him to turn it on between
verses 1 and 2.
Verse
1
Can
I be dreaming
Is
this just make believing
Can
someone tell me is this false or true
This
situation is beyond explanation
Will
someone tell me please what I should do
Alone
and helpless in this world of fear
Tell
me where did we go wrong
Please
tell the world I want to disappear
I
need a way out from the throng
So
long
Verse
2
Can
I be dreaming
Or
are things as they're seeming
Is
this real or just a fantasy
And
are you seeing just what I am seeing
Does
it appear as it appears to me
And
are you feeling what I think I feel
As
the fantasy unfolds
And
read the hand of cards that life will deal
Telling
stories to be told
So
cold
Middle
Eight
Why
can't they see I only looking for escape
Release
from this world of loneliness
To
a more attractive place
Verse
3
But
if I’m dreaming
And
it's all just make believing
Why
does this all seem so real to me
Imagination
is their explanation
Does
it explain how it seems to be
My
life is more than just a day time dream
Inspired
by movies on TV
Much
more than comic books and fantasy
That's
how it always seems to be
To
me
